Congress on Thursday released a list of 27 candidates which lists former minister Filipe Neri Rodrigues as the sorry candidate from Velim. GFP, on the other other hand, is seeking the seat for its candidate, Anthony Rodrigues, a two-time Zilla Parishad member.
Heated discussion reportedly continued through Thursday in New Delhi between GFP supremo Vijai Sardessai and Congress high command over the sharing of Velim seat. The round of deliberations concluded with GFP refusing to blink.
Speaking to The Goan, Sardessai stated, “We are still in discussion with Congress high command. But we cannot be in alliance if Velim is not given to GFP. “He further stated that the party insists on having at least two seats in South Goa, especially Salcete, which is admittedly the stronghold and birthplace of the party.
GFP state executive convened an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation and opined that it is make or break over Velim.
In a statement released in latter part of the day, GFP executive stated, “GFP is not happy with seat sharing formula of the Congress and feels strongly about it. Party is of the opinion that it should go alone for the election without an alliance and party will convey this feeling to the party mentor MLA Sardesai when he arrives from Delhi.”
