'Neyim' celebrated in Canacona

Bringing new paddy crop ‘Konos’ in the household is a sign of prosperity, which several Hindu households in the taluka observed with religious fervour on Tuesday.
Marking the second day of Ganesh festival, residents celebrated ‘Neyim’ with religious fervour as early morning rains somewhat dampened festival spirits.
According to the Hindu tradition, bringing the newly-flowered paddy crop ‘Konos’ in the household gives a sign of prosperity for the rest of the year. ‘Neyim’ is celebrated on the second day of Ganesh Chathurti.
Some of the people as per their traditional practice had already celebrated ‘Neyim’ some days ago, while many others bringing the newly-sprouted paddy in their households on the second day of Ganesh Chaturthi.
Since early morning, people with a sickle in their hands were seen proceeding to different paddy fields looking for flowered paddy, which incidentally is very rare given the fallow fields.
While few were seen walking to the cultivated paddy fields, many others were seen either cycling, riding motorcycles and others driving in four wheelers to get ‘Konos’ to their respective homes.
Meanwhile, rains played spoilsport early Tuesday morning dampening the festival spirit, but rest of the day was largely sunny with many people visiting neighbourhood and relatives to adore and seek blessings from Lord Ganesha.
