CANACONA

The Canacona-based NGO Goenkar on Monday filed a police complaint accusing Dy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes and others of defying Section 144 and holding functions across Canacona taluka which endangered lives of staff at the electricity and health departments.

In their complaint, Goenkar said a person from Poinguinim has posted several photos on two WhatsApp groups on Sunday morning.

Attaching screenshots of these photos taken during felicitation functions in Agonda and Loliem, Goenkar alleged that Fernandes and others had misused their position and had endangered the lives of staff at the electricity and health departments in view of the current Covid pandemic situation.

“It is a clear-cut defiance of the recent South Goa district magistrate's order wherein Section 144 has been imposed throughout South Goa,” stated the complaint.

The complaint further stated that during the current pandemic situations all functions have been banned in the State.

“But the Canacona MLA seems to have no regards for the government order as well as towards the well-being of his constituents,” stated Goenkar.

Goenkar has demand necessary and strict action under Section 188 IPC, Pandemic Act and other relevant acts against the MLA Canacona Isidore Fernandes and others, for organising the felicitation functions without following SOPs and without prior permissions.

When asked to respond to the police complaint filed by the NGO, Fernandes said he is ready to face the law if he did anything wrong.

“If I have done anything against the law, I may be punished. If there is any substance in their complaint, let the law take its own course. I have nothing more to say as of now,” replied Fernandes.
