Amid plans to make Canacona municipality a plastic-free zone within the next 2-3 years, the Canacona-based NGO ‘Goenkar’ will observe World Environment Day on Monday with an awareness programme and felicitation of workers.
NGO Goenkar’s associate ‘We for Palolem’ will hold a 3-tier programme at the Palolem Club house on Monday evening, where the labours working to maintain cleanliness (municipal workers, beach-cleaning women and other workers) will be felicitated.
Every participant at this programme will get a fruit-bearing sapling at the programme.
‘We for Palolem’ will plant 15 different type of saplings across the NH66 highway, and will nurture them till they are fully grown trees. They will also work towards making the Ourem street from Palolem-Ourem junction a plastic-free zone.
Similarly, ‘Friends of Canacona’, who recently held a cleanliness drive at Colomb with local youth as part of their commitment to maintain a healthy environment, has adopted the street from Masjim (Tembewada) to Colomb to make it plastic-free.
Addressing media, Goenkar General Secretary Vikas Bhagat along with Gasper Coutinho (We for Palolem) and Lloyd Godinho (Friends of Canacona) said Goenkar is working on the garbage issue since the last nine years.
“Goenkar has a long-drawn plan to make the entire Canacona municipality a Plastic-Free zone in 2-3 years. We have deputed a couple on cycle to maintain roadside cleaning. They regularly take rounds and pick-up roadside plastic.”
“Similarly, ‘Friends of Canacona’ has decided to adopt a similar procedure to make the street from Masjid (Tembewada) till Colomb plastic“free and the ‘We for Palolem’ will maintain Ourem street free of plastics, in our endeavour to make the entire municipality a plastic-free zone.
