Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said screening has been scaled up for people from border regions of Goa, including Sindhudurg, where the Delta plus Coronavirus variant has been found, even as he expressed fear that the uncertainty of the looming ‘third wave’ will weigh heavily on his government’s decision to open up tourism-related activities.

Pointing out that in Sindhudurg, the ‘Delta plus’ variant is found, Sawant said, screening at the border areas is on.

As of Wednesday, 26 samples were found positive for the Delta variant in Goa, but no case of the ‘Delta plus’ variant is found in Goa thus far.

Meanwhile, the uncertainty of the looming third Covid-19 wave will weigh in on the government’s decision to restart tourism.

Sawant reiterated that unless 100 per cent of the population is vaccinated at least with the first jab tourism will not be reopened. He also said July 30 was the targeted date for the vaccination coverage with the first jab.

“We have extended the curfew to 28 (June) but our industrial activities are on. Mostly, tourism activities are shut down. We can think of restarting tourism activity after 100 per cent completion of the first dose, which is after July 30,” Sawant said.

“We will take a decision after analysing the possibility of the third wave,” Sawant said.
