Asserting that the disqualification case against the eight Congress turncoats is being heard in a routine manner, Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly on Monday said there is no direction to dispose off the matter in a time-bound manner.
That’s not all. The Speaker pointed out that it takes 5-10 years for the courts to dispose of legal matters, saying it’s just a year since the disqualification case was field before his office.
“One should understand that I am a Speaker, who has to act as a Judge. I have to hear both sides, record the statements of the parties. The parties seek dates and adjournments. The disqualification petition has been going on for the last one year. Sometimes, the hearing ends in 10 minutes, while on some days, the arguments goes on for an hour and half. It all depends on the parties to the dispute”, he said.
When the media sought to know whether any directions have been given to him to dispose the disqualification case in a time-bound manner Tawadkar replied in the negative. He, however, hastened to add there is no question of disposing of the mater in a hurry. “There is no question of disposing the case in a time-bound manner. It is a process and one has to follow the process. We have to understand that cases are going on in the courts for five years and sometimes for 10 years. Hence, there can be no question of disposing the case in a time-bound manner”, he asserted.
On his stand over the proposed Film City in his Canacona constituency, Tawadkar made it clear that whenever any project is mooted in the constituency, the first thing the people try to find out whether it would benefit them in terms of employment and the impact on the environment. “Since Canacona falls on the State’s southern most end, people find out whether any project would benefit in terms of employment and how it would impact the environment. The Film City is coming on Comunidade land, which is rocky and can be used for the project”, he added.
