North Goa among 30 districts for diabetes prevention prog

In a countrywide mission to control diabetes through yoga, North Goa has been selected among 30 districts in India to spread awareness and prevent diabetes through a ministry of Ayush initiated programme.

Through this programme, 4,000 people will be screened in each district by a dedicated band of volunteers.   
“After every 6 seconds, a person dies of diabetes and after every 5 seconds a person reports of diabetes in India. MNB is an ambitious movement to prevent India from becoming the diabetes capital of the world,” said Dharamveer Jain, the Western region coordinator of the programme, while addressing a news conference in Mapusa.   
Narayan Ratwad, a yoga instructor from Mapusa, Felly Gomes from Assagao and others who have offered their services to the success of the mission in the State were also present.   
In North Goa, two towns and four villages have been divided in two groups “ yoga group and control group.   
Mapusa and Vasco are the two towns and Siolim, Assagao, Bastora and Revora are the four villages that have been identified, where screening of people will be done.   
Mapusa, Assagao and Siolim are in yoga group and Vasco, Revora and Bastora are in control group.   
Two local hospitals “ Redkar Hospital and Research Centre and Vision Multi-specialty Hospital “ have come forward to lend their help in making the initiative a success through their medical and para-medical staff.   
“In yoga group, we will give yoga protocol intervention for 90 days to diabetic and pre-diabetic people, while in control group there won’t be any yoga intervention but we will motivate them to change their lifestyle and educate them to adopt healthy habits,” the coordinator said.   
Later, 4,000 people will be screened “ 1,000 in each town and 500 each in villages.   
“While screening, a team of volunteers will go door to door and collect data. The screening process has already started,” Jain said.   
After screening, people with diabetes and those who are pre-diabetic will be identified and a pre-blood test will be conducted on them.   
Later, nine days of yoga camp will be conducted for the selected people from the yoga group followed by a weekly follow-up.
