The North Goa District Road Safety Committee on Friday resolved to conduct a weekly review of pending road engineering works, speed limits and safety signage along the National Highway stretch in North Goa over the next two months.
The decisions, taken during a meeting chaired by Additional Collector-I Gurudas Desai, come in view of rising accidents on the highways with the recent deadly accident on the Bambolim slope claiming the lives of two Sepak Takraw personalities -- Yogender Singh and Ankit Kumar Baliyan. The duo was killed by a speeding tanker, killing them on the spot.
The committee members also stressed the need to monitor stray cattle on major roads and highways in view of recurring accidents.
GOACAN Coordinator Roland Martins, also present in the meeting and one of the stakeholders, stated that the committee has decided to carry out an inspection of the approach roads to Karmali and Thivim railway stations to assess safety and traffic flow conditions.
“Intensive enforcement against drunk driving and the illegal driving of vehicles on beaches has also been planned. Officials said awareness activities will be conducted on the compensation scheme available for road accident victims. The committee also resolved to review the status of all zebra crossings across North Goa to ensure pedestrian safety,” he said.
