According to sources, about eight Loliem residents received notices on June 6 from the Deputy Collector & SDM Canacona Kedar Naik to appear before his court under Section 111 CrPC, stating all the eight have criminal background and may pose danger to the society if set at large in view of the panchayat election.
All eight residents were asked to appear before his court on Thursday and state why they should not be made to keep a bond of Rs 5,000 each and keep a surety of the same amount for keeping peace for the next six months.
In his complaint, the Canacona police inspector stated that the eight persons have a criminal background and may pose a danger to the society if set at large.
Sources informed that all the eight appeared before the SDM on Thursday and signed papers, but did not pay any amount of Rs 5,000 as bond.
“This is a clear instant of political vendetta by a former Loliem-Polem sarpanch, who filed a false police complaint against the eight persons, after the gram sabha on IIT issue at Loliem,” said CCL president Dennis Fernandes in a press note. Decrying such pressure tactics against the peaceful villagers, Fernandes demanded immediate withdrawal of the police case filed against them by the former Loliem-Polem sarpanch.
“All the eight persons are ordinary, peaceful villagers with no criminal record or background at all. At a gram sabha held in November 2016, over 1,500 villagers had peacefully voted against the proposed IIT at Bhagwati plateau.”
“After the meeting was long over, the sarpanch lodged a complaint at the Canacona Police station, falsely accusing the eight persons of criminal acts at the gram sabha venue. Though no evidence was produced nor any investigations carried out, they have been summoned to the police station six times already,” said Fernandes.
