No-trust move at Cuncolim fizzles out
MARGAO: The no-confidence motion tabled against Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Lavita Mascarenhas was defeated on Monday, with the seven-member ruling group voting against the motion.
The motion was declared defeated by the presiding officer as it received the support of only five opposition members.
The no-confidence motion was tabled by seven councillors, including two ruling members, Vice-Chairperson Mario Moraes and Shashank Desai. Both Mario and Shashank had immediately withdraw their support to the motion after the intervention of the former Urban Development Minister, Joaquim Alemao.
Commenting on the outcome of the no confidence motion, Alemao has said the pressure mounted on the ruling CMC group by the BJP did not work. “Their efforts to destabilise the Cuncolim Municipal Council did not work. The BJP has been thoroughly exposed now. They failed to usher in development in the Cuncolim Municipal area and now they tried to destablise the council,” Joaquim said, adding the development works carried out during his previous tenure will keep him in good stead in the coming Assembly election.
