PANAJI: Oil marketing companies like Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) have started making 5 kg LPG cylinder available through fair price shops in Goa. This information was confirmed by Sandip Pawar, territory manager (LPG), BPCL.
Pawar said, “Anyone can go to a fair price shop and buy a 5 kg LPG cylinder by just showing an ID proof. You don’t have to show any residence proof to buy this 5 kg cylinder. There are a number of migrant workers in Goa, who don’t have a residence proof in the state. They can go and buy this cylinder. We call this 5 kg cylinder FTL (free-trade-LPG).”
Besides migrants, a number of students and locals with low income stand to benefit due to the launch of the small 5 kg cylinder. In case, they can’t get a regular 14.2 kg LPG cylinder, they can just go to a fair price shop and buy a 5 kg LPG cylinder.
Another official from an oil company said, “You can buy a 5 kg cylinder from one fair price shop and get its refill from another fair price shop. This allows great flexibility to consumers, which wasn’t possible with a 14.2 kg cylinder.”
The official continued, “The price of one 5 kg LPG cylinder is around Rs 1,266 in Goa, which is inclusive of GST. This includes Rs 382 for LPG and remaining Rs 884 for the cylinder. Once a cylinder is over, you can get a refill by paying Rs 382.”
“Rs 884 for a cylinder includes Rs 29 processing charges and Rs 130 for GST. This means that the cost of a cylinder is Rs 725. Once you give back a cylinder to a fair-price-shop, you will get 50% of Rs 725, which is Rs 362.5, returned to you,” he added.
Starting from March 16, these 5 kg LPG cylinders will be available at fair-price-shops in Tiswadi, Bardez and Ponda talukas. The oil companies will launch these cylinders in other talukas soon.
