Four days after serving the termination notice on the Margao Municipal Council, Fomento on Friday told the civic body that effective from June 17, the company will not accept any further supply of mixed waste and shall continue to do so till it is supplied proper segregated waste as contemplated in the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.
In a letter to the MMC Chief Officer, Fomento made it point blank clear to the civic body that the company is not in a position to accept supply of mixed waste any longer, since, inter alia, there is no further space in the plant to receive mixed waste.
“We have repeatedly called upon to supply segregated waste and that we are unable to accept the unsegregated waste. Excluded waste and non-compostable waste is being supplied to us. However, despite our entreaties, the situation continues and MMC continues to supply the same, with impunity,” Fomento said in the notice, while pointing out that such supply, besides being contrary to the terms of the Concession Agreement, is also contrary to the mandatory Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.
Fomento reminded the Chief Officer that the company had addressed several letters earlier, resting with termination notice, which brought to the notice of the civic body that MMC is continuing to supply unsegregated waste as also excluded waste, including untreated medical waste, dead animal remains (including bones/chicken waste) and other non-compostable waste.
“We had also pointed out that the unsegregated waste is very often supplied in a compressed form and often deeply buried in the vehicles or concealed in plastic bags, which is near impossible to detect and sort out,” Sudin Raiturcar of Fomento stated in the letter.
Fomento’s letter to the Margao Municipal Council comes on a day when officials of the Director of Municipal Administration, Solid Waste Management Corporation and others virtually admitted that the supply of mixed waste, including tones of plastic waste transported by the civic body has left the waste treatment plant saturated and choked.
In fact, Solid Waste Management Corporation Managing Director Levinson Martins made it clear to the MMC Chief Officer Sidhivinayak Naik and Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai that segregation of waste at source is now mandated by law and that the civic body is required by law to send only segregated waste to the waste treatment plant.
