Government doctors attached to the Hospicio hospital as well as private doctors, who are members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) held separate protests in the city here against violence let loose on doctors in West Bengal.
While Hospicio doctors led by Medical Superintendent Dr Ira Almeida held a protest outside the Hospicio hospital, IMA doctors assembled at the Ravindra Bhavan to protest and condemn the violence on doctors.
Secretary IMA, Margao branch, Dr Suraj Prabhudesai said the sole aim of the protest is directed against the violence on doctors which has left the doctor community in a state of fear and restlessness. “We are all aware of the recent attack on Dr Praibha Mukherjee, a young doctor at the NRS Medical College, Kolkata is in a very critical state and is fighting for his life. We, the members of Margao IMA strongly condemn such cowardly act,” he said, adding that this act is brutal and inhuman and involves workplace violence.
IMA, Margao branch President Dr Sudhir Shet said the violence against doctors is a long pending issues, adding that it is time for the doctor community to stand united against such acts in order to protect its members. “We wholeheartedly extend our support to the resident doctors at NRS Medical College and Hospital. We urge the West Bengal government to look into this matter with a serious intent and take appropriate actions against the criminals,” Shet demanded.
He said the Goa Medicare Act brought in force by former Chief Minister late Manohar Parrikar has been a good law and should be implemented in necessary cases in Goa.
The IMA also requested the doctors in government organisations to extend their support to the cause, saying IMA will work with solidarity for the resident doctors till a satisfactory solution is worked out in this regard.
