State Education Secretary Neela Mohanan stressed on the ever-growing importance of teachers in a world that was becoming more and more technology-oriented.
“There are so many distractions, diversions and ‘more important’ things that occupy students’ minds today,” said Mohanan, adding, “It is a challenge for a teacher to grab their attention and keep them enthused and inspired enough to be an equal stakeholder in the process of education.”
Mohanan was speaking at the Directorate of Education’s annual State Awards for Teachers, held at Kala Academy on Wednesday.
In her address, Mohanan also spoke about the joys of being a teacher. While pointing out that a teacher never becomes old since s/he is constantly around young people, she also explained how each year was a new experience for a teacher, as each new class brought in fresher experiences, and no two classes were ever the same. “That is the beauty, but the challenge of teaching,” she said.
With CMM anohar Parrikar unavailable in the state, the awards were given by Chief Secretary Dharmendra Sharma.
Nine teachers from five categories were felicitated with a certificate and a trophy. The awardees will also get a one-year extension to their teaching careers. Parrikar’s message was read out at the function, while the Chief Secretary and Director of Education Gajanan Bhat both congratulated the awardees in their speeches.
