The State Cabinet has given approval to the appointment of Justice Nutan Sardessai as chairperson of the State Police Complaint Authority (SPCA) and for reconstitution of the related committee.
Known as the iron lady, Sardesai served as a Judge of the Bombay High Court from March 2016 to August 2020 and had played a pivotal role in taking the judiciary to enhanced heights. Before that she had worked as district judge in both the districts of Goa.
A perfectionist, her extensive knowledge of law and the outstanding precision with the English language remained exceptional throughout her career. Her orders and judgements were always error-free.
The decision of her appointment was announced on Wednesday. As is known, SPCA was non-functional without a chairman for the last few years.
The tenure of the last chairman of the body Justice RMS Khandeparkar had ended on April 15, 2018. SPCA are constituted in states across India with the objective of adjudicating allegations of improper or shoddy investigations, refusal to file FIRs, custodial torture and high-handedness against the police.
