Residents of Nuvem on Thursday cried foul to the land filling taking place along the Nuvem bypass, as they stopped trucks transporting mud for want of action by the Town and Country Planning department and the flying squad.
Social activist Jose Roque Andrade along with Nuvem Zilla Panchayat member Wilfred D’Sa told the media that they had been approaching the flying squad as well as the TCP, but lamented that there’s no action forthcoming from the authorities concerned. “When we questioned the persons present at the land filling site, they claimed that the filling is being done for the highway. But, we strongly suspect that it is the handiwork of some private party,” the duo said, while saying that the area where mud has been dumped during the last three days constitute a catchment area for the rain water.
What has surprised the local residents is the inaction by the TCP and the flying squad. “Officials of the two authorities sought to push the blame on each other for inspection and initiating action against the land filling activity,” Jose Roque Andrade siad.
The Nuvem ZP member wondered whether the common man would ever get justice if the authorities ignore the complaints made by the elected representatives. “We demand that either the TCP or the flying squad should immediately stop the land filling and prosecute the guilty for the activity,” Wilfred demanded.
