“His brain has suffered significant injury because of lack of blood supply to the brain when he suffered the cardiac arrest. It is now 12 days since he suffered the cardiac arrest and there is an improvement in his medical status. He has been weaned off the ventilator today,” a statement released by the Director of Professional Services at the Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai has said.
“All of his other organs are functioning well. He underwent a tracheostomy on August 19. If he continues to be comfortable without the ventilator, then further treatment plan will be worked out,” the statement said.
Deputy Speaker Vishnu Surya Naik Wagh was admitted to the Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai after suffering the cardiac arrest on the evening August 15, 2016.
Wagh was resuscitated from a cardiac arrest at the Goa Medical College and after his condition failed to improve, he was transferred to the Hinduja Hospital on the August 18.
On admission he was in a coma but all of his other organs were functioning normally. He has undergone an MRI examination of his brain and has had three EEGs he has been examined by a neurologist and three intensivists who are monitoring his condition regularly.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar too paid him a
visit recently.
Seeking to assuage the concerns of media persons, Parsekar said that part of the problem was because Wagh’s recovery has been very slow.
“As long as he was in Goa, people used to get updates. There it is a different situation. There his medical care is important. Coming to normalcy is important. It was suggested that a medical bulletin be issued. But for some reason or the other it was not done. When I visited him, I suggested at least once a week it be issued since his restoration is very slow,” Parsekar said adding that information has been slow in coming also that the sensibilities of his family
are respected.
Media persons pointed to the chief minister that amateurish updates or absence of them, led to rumours and the deputy speaker being poked fun at even as he was recovering.
