The Vasco Carnival Committee on Tuesday announced the schedule and programme for the upcoming Carnival celebrations. It made it clear that any float showing vulgar scenes or hurting religious sentiments will not be allowed in the parade.
The main float parade will be held in Vasco on February 16. However, the festivities will begin from February 14, committee chairman Agnelo Nunes told the media.
“The Carnival programmes will begin on February 14 with the flagging off of the Carnival Mobile Van on Saturday evening,” Nunes said.
The opening day will also have a fancy dress competition, a folk dance by Creation, a dance contest and a music show by Goan artiste DJ Skeletron along with dance group Infinix.
Nunes said traditional Khell Tiatr shows will be held at Bhutebhat, Vaddem Lake, Kharewado, Matvem, Chicalim, New Vaddem, Mangor and Baina so that the celebrations reach various parts of Vasco.
On February 15, there will be a Konkani musical show by Lawry Travasso, Ester Noronha and other artistes.
The main float parade on Monday, February 16, will start at 3.30 pm. This will be followed by a live show by DJ Mazel Fealiero at 7 pm.
According to Nunes, the celebrations will end on Tuesday, February 17, with a performance by artiste Tsumyoki at 7 pm, prize distribution at 8 pm and a live band show by Neon at 9 pm.
Committee member August D’Costa said strict rules will be followed during the parade.
“Floats showing vulgarity or insulting any religion will not be allowed. Carnival is celebrated by people of all religions, and Vasco, being a cosmopolitan city, reflects this spirit,” D’Costa said.
He added that cycles will not be allowed in the parade. A screening committee, along with police personnel, will check all entries.
D’Costa appealed to parents to keep a close watch on children during the parade. He also asked commuters and taxi operators to take alternative routes as roads may be blocked.
Those who want to take part in the float parade must fill in the forms, submit photographs and identity proof, and get clearance from the screening committee appointed by the Tourism Department. Forms are available at the Vasco Municipal Council office.
A special pandal will also be set up near St Andrew’s Church on February 16 to accept entries.
