Lack of coordination amongst civic officials attached to various sections of MMC threatens to derail the solid waste management system in the commercial capital.
None other than an assistant engineer and a junior engineer reminded Chairperson Lyndon Pereira that the solid waste management cannot be managed by a single official and teamwork was needed to tide over the problems at Sonsodo waste treatment plant as well as issues such as black spots, mixed waste coming from door-to-door collection.
For better handling of solid waste management, the city is divided into five zones, with a junior engineer heading each of these.
The assistant engineer, however, conveyed to the Chairperson that the system has gone haywire for want of action by the technical staff.
“No one should be under the impression that Sonsodo or garbage can be resolved once the civic body has designated an assistant engineer. One should remove this misconception and all should join in the job to overcome the issues,” the assistant engineer said.
The engineers should hit the roads to ensure that door-to-door waste collection is back on the tracks and the number of black spots are reduced further, he added.
Sources say the Chairperson should call for an urgent meeting of officials comprising CO Agnelo Fernandes, municipal engineer
Dinisio D’Mello and others, besides sanitation officials to put in place a holistic approach to address the Sonsodo imbroglio.
“Let the CO and the municipal engineer take routine rounds of the city, check the nature of waste collected door to door and visit the
black spots to get the sub-ordinates work after putting the system in place”, remarked an official.
