Officials clamp down on retail sale of fish at wholesale market

as early as 3 am in the morning.
The migrant vendors selling retail fish in the wholesale fish market were also conspicuous by their absence as the men in uniform made their presence felt in the market.
However, a couple of local vendors were seen sitting with basketful of fish inside the market.
Policemen were also deployed on the wholesale fish platform to ensure that the fish merchants and agents do not sell less than five kgs to the customers.
The fruit vendors, besides other hawkers, who used to carry out their business activity at the entrance to the wholesale fish market were driven away by the Margao Municipal workers.
The fruit vendors, however, were seen making brisk business along the wholesale fish market-La Grace road right under the nose of the civic authorities.
PI Navlesh told the media at the wholesale fish market that the police tried to persuade the vendors as well as the vehicle owners on the decision taken by the TCP Minister and the authorities to clampdown on the retail sale of fish in the wholesale market and haphazard parking along the road.
At around 8 am, a group of traditional fishermen were seen sitting just outside the gate for want of space inside even as the police ensured that they do not come close to the main road.
The fish cutters, who have been told by the TCP Minister to wind up their activity by 8 am, said that they should be given time at least till 9 am, to meet the requirements.
"We would be grateful if the deadline set for us is extended till 9 am because of the work load and the need to cut the fish of the business establishments on time," a fish cutter said,
adding that they would petition to the TCP Minister to give them time till 9 am to wind up their business.

MMC urged to crack down on illegal vendors, hawkers
MARGAO: Gandhi market vegetable and ready made garment vendors on Wednesday set a deadline on the Margao Municipal Council to crack a whip against the illegal vendors and hawkers along the station road and Comunidade building.
Led by Gandhi market vegetable and ready made garments vendors Association Rajendra Azgaonkar, the vendors conveyed a message loud and clear to Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes that they will not tolerate illegal vendors from conducting business right under their nose.
Azgaonkar pointed out that the illegal vendors and hawkers are carrying out the illegal activity along the station road area, Comunidade building and at other areas in the commercial capital. They wondered how the illegal activity has received a big boost when the Municipal officials and workers are expected to maintain a vigil against the unauthorized activity.
Azgaonkar has threatened to come with a huge morcha on the Civic body if the ground reality does not change immediately.
He later told the media that the Chief Officer has sought eight day time to crack a whip against the illegal vendors which has mushroomed all across the city in recent times. "These illegal vendors make their presence felt before the office hours, during noon and after officer hours when the Municipal workers are not on the field. We have asked the Chief Officer to work out a mechanism wherein Municipal workers are on the field to crack a whip against the illegal vendors", Azgaonkar said and warned that the vendors will come in large numbers if the ground situation does not change within eight days.
In fact, sources in the municipality conceded that the number of illegal vendors have mushroomed in the market areas of the city in recent times with no action forthcoming from the municipal authorities for reasons best known to the Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes and the Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai.
