SANGUEM
Officials from the Primary Health Centre (PHC), Sanguem, and the Animal Husbandry Department inspected the piggery farm at Costi-Kalay in Sanguem taluka amid ongoing protests by residents.
The villagers have alleged that untreated wastewater from the farm is being discharged into a nearby natural drain. They claimed the polluted discharge has caused a foul smell, mosquito breeding and environmental pollution, raising fears of disease outbreaks and health risks for both residents and livestock.
Acting on repeated complaints, officials from the Sanguem PHC and the Animal Husbandry Department carried out an inspection in the presence of village representatives. During the visit, they examined the alleged discharge of wastewater into the natural nullah. The villagers demanded an immediate stop to the discharge of untreated wastewater, strict action against the farm management, regular monitoring of air and water quality, protection of public health and natural resources, and the permanent relocation of the piggery farm.
They also warned of intensifying their agitation if their concerns are not addressed. However, the issue related to the operation of the farm is currently sub judice. As the matter is pending before the court, authorities cannot take any fresh action until the legal proceedings are completed. Any further relief sought by the villagers is therefore likely to depend on the outcome of the case.
