With the famous Dindi Festival and the Julus procession scheduled on a single day (November 21), South Goa District Collector Dr Tariq Thomas had a meeting with representatives of both the Dindi Utsav Samiti and Julus committee to ensure that the two events pass off without any problem.
The meeting also assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of the violence in the Gogol Housing Board over the Julus procession route illumination.
District Police Chief SP Arvind Gawas, Deputy Collector Uday Prabhudesai, DySP Raju Raut Desai, DySP Traffic Prabodh Shirwaikar and Fatorda PI Navlesh Desai along with the representatives of the two committees attended the meeting in the District Collectorate on Monday evening.
The District Collector is believed to have sought cooperation of both the committees for the smooth conduct of the two events. Members of the two committees were advised to report any incident to the authorities instead of taking suo moto action.
After the meeting, Dindi Utsav Samiti President Suhas Kamat told The Goan that the Collector has asked the two committee to ensure that they strictly adhere to the routes approved by the authorities. “We have been told to draw the attention of the authorities to any problem faced on the day of the festivities,” Suhas said.
Councillor Rupesh Mahatme, Hitesh Lotlikar, Raju Mahatme and Sharmad Raiturcar were part of the team.
On the other hand, Julus committee member and President of the Jamia Masjid, Atik Banducda, said that the Collector has asked them to form a team of 25 volunteers from each of the masjids for the smooth conduct of the festival.
“I have told the Collector that there will be no problem on the day of the festivities. We have been celebrating Dindi festival as well with our Hindu brethren since our childhood days,” Atik said, adding that Jama Masjid-Pajifond-Hospicio-Ravindra Bhavan route is acceptable to the Muslim community.
