With the fishing ban along the eastern coast in the states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coming to an end on June 15, fish from Chennai and Andhra Pradesh has began flooding Goa’s lone wholesale fish market since the last three days.
Fresh sardines and mackerels from these two states, besides Kerala, have landed in the wholesale fish market since June 15. Though the ban is enforced along the western coast, sardines from Kerala have been coming into Goa from the southern state.
A visit to the wholesale fish market in the last two days revealed that dozens of outstation trucks were found parked in the market unloading tonnes of fish, including sardines and mackerels. A couple of wholesalers were also found selling kingfish and other variety of fish in the market.
The wholesale market platform was also inundated with shrimps, and information revealed that theshrimps have come mostly from culture farms in Karnataka.
President of the Wholesale fish Association, M Ibrahim told the media on Saturday that the last three days witnessed a bumper landing of sardines and mackerels at Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
“Sardines and mackerels have been made available at reasonable rates in the wholesale fish market. I can say that one can get cheap fish in the wholesale fish market during the monsoon than during the fishing season,” Ibrahim said.
The much-sought after ‘Velle’ fish, loved by Goans in general, has also flooded the wholesale fish market. Inquiries have revealed that the fish has arrived from the Maharashtra coast.
