However, despite coming to an agreement that the rate of bread needs to be increased, there was no unanimity on the exact price to be charged to the consumers with the bakers deciding to wait for the all Goa bakers’ meet to be convened in Panaji next Sunday.
“We had organized the meeting to decide on increasing the price of bread, as already the price is increased in other parts of Goa. But, we were unable to come to any conclusive decision,” a baker Subhash Gaonkar from Carambolim informed while stating that they will now await the decision of the all Goa bakers’ meet.
Some bakers, however, have voiced displeasure over the price suggested by the All Goa Bakers Association of charging Rs 5 for 50 grammes bread. “An increase of Rs 2 would mean that the consumers will stop buying bread and instead would prefer slice bread which would be much more economical,” said a traditional baker on condition of anonymity while stating that in such a scenario the business of the traditional baker, involved only in bread making, would be finished.
The traditional baker then went on to add that only those bakers, who are involved in making other bakery products as well, would survive leaving the traditional bakers in the lurch.
“Hence, there is a need to take the opinion of the traditional bakers before arriving at any price hike,” he added.
