On International Seafarers Day, GSAI calls for protecting rights of seafarers

MARGAO
On International Seafarers Day, the Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) has appealed to the shipping companies and the Director General of Shipping to protect the rights of the seafarers.

The seafarers’ organisation has demanded thorough investigation in cases of death at sea and justice to the seafarers.

Commissioner NRI Affairs, Adv Narendra Sawaikar assured the seafaring community from Goa that the doors of the NRI office and the government are always open for the seafarers to come and resolve their issues.

As this year’s International Seafarers Day is centered on the theme “Safety tips at sea”, GSAI president Frank Viegas, in his welcome address, said the theme is of paramount importance for the seafarers.

“As seafarers, your safety is our utmost priority. The ocean, while magnificent and awe-inspiring, is also a place of unpredictability and potential danger. Hence, adhering to safety protocols is not just a necessity but a responsibility we all share. As we know piracy attack, drone attacks are on the rise but we have to acknowledge our Indian Navy (marine commandos) for their wonderful job in protecting the high seas,” he said.

Saying that safety at sea is a collective effort that demands vigilance, knowledge and proactive measures, the GSAI president urged the seamen to internalise these safety tips and make them a part of their daily routine.

In his address, NRI Commissioner Sawaikar said the office of NRI Affairs has always lent a helping hand to the seafarers, be it bringing the mortal remains of seafarers expired abroad or other issues. “The doors of NRI Commissioner and the government are always open for the seafarers. You can just knock to come inside and get your issue resolved,” he added.

Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa said he has always raised the issue of seafarers both within the Assembly and outside, be it on issues relating to pension or to bring the mortal remains of seafarers from abroad.

“We have been told that so many retired seafarers have not received their pension. I along with Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao will raise the issue in the forthcoming session of the Goa Legislative Assembly,” he said.

On the occasion, GSAI recognised and felicitated seafarers presently working as Chefs/ Chief Cook in the shipping industry.
