MARGAO
The Margao police achieved a breakthrough into a rape-cum-extortion case reported in May last at Navelim. A minor girl was allegedly molested and was forced to part with her gold ornaments valued at Rs 27 lakh.
Two brothers, who were the prime accused in the case, had gone into hiding. The Margao police who had dispatched teams to Telangana in search of the two -- Hazzam and Jabbar Hingola -- had returned empty handed.
However, the team headed by PSI Sujjay Korgaonkar met with success this time when they managed to lay their hands on one of the brothers, Jabbar, who the police say is the main accused in the extortion.
Margao PI Tushar Lotlikar informed that the police are on the look out of the other brother Hazzam to take the investigation to its logical conclusion.
Explaining the modus operandi adopted by the accused brothers, PI Lotlikar said the duo befriended the minor girl, hailing from Navelim and later blackmailed her by threatening to make her photos viral if she did not hand over the gold ornaments.
“We are investigating the case. Accused Jabbar, who is now in police custody, will be interrogated at length in the matter,” he said.
