CANACONA
A 35-year-old labourer was killed on the spot while another sustained leg injuries and five others sustained minor injuries when a truck laden with bamboos for tourism activities turned turtle at Gulem-Canacona on Tuesday morning.
According to sources, the truck loaded of Bamboos brought from Ratnagiri was heading to Canacona. The bamboos were meant for tourism activities in Canacona and 7 labourers were also seated in the cargo along with the bamboos.
After negotiating the sharp turn, the truck’s left wheels went off the road and the vehicle fell on its side.
The deceased, Porama Chutia, a native of Assam was crushed under a pile of bamboos and he was pulled out by the Canacona police and Canacona fire services. Chutia was taken to the Community Health Centre (CHC), where he was declared dead on arrival, police said.
The body was later shifted to Margao for a postmortem.
Another labourer Manom Gam (18), also from Assam, sustained leg broken after the bamboos also fell on him after the truck fell off the road. Five others suffered minor injuries.
Highway traffic was paralysed for about 90 minutes, compelling authorities to divert traffic via the Agonda-Khola MDR road.
PSI Ramchandra Naik is investigating the case under the supervision of Canacona PI Chandrakant Gawas.
The mishap took place at the same location where another truck had recently fallen off the NH66 highway where the PWD had erected bamboo railings.
