For decades the debate over Goa’s pathetic public transport and its virtual non-existence after sundown may have yielded little results if any but an online petition addressed to the Kadamba Transport Corporation, is fast gaining supporters and could potentially awaken transport officials from their slumber.

Even if the demand listed in the online petition started by Goa Road Safety Forum is restricted to public transport at night in the capital city, the hub of events and other gatherings post office hours, it could inspire similar demands across the State.

“Panjim witnesses several events organized late into the night and attendees are left with no choice but to use their personal vehicles to participate as public transport options are limited,” says the GRSF petition.

The petition goes on to say that several businesses in the capital operate until late at night and workmen need a secure and reliable transport system to get back home.

The petition also states that the use of personal vehicles due to lack of public transport puts severe burden on the city in terms of congestion, pollution and overall disturbance of peace, adding that the capital city deserves better facilities.

The online petition demands that KTCL start regular bus services betwen 7 pm and 11 pm in the city which should operate on intra-city roads and connect the residential zones.

Accessibility features and sufficient inner illumination in the buses for safety reasons are also demanded.
