Believe it or not, while thousands of migrant labourers from the endemic states of Odhissa and Jharkhand have descended at the Cutbona fishing jetty, health officials from the Primary Health Centre, Balli have managed to screen only 250 workers during the last one month.
Though the health centre had drafted a dedicate team at the Cutbona fishing jetty from August 1 to screen the migrant workers, the team has only received a lukewarm response from the boat owners.
A health official told The
Goan on Wednesday that the Balli Health centre has written letters to the Deputy Collector, Margao, Cutbona Boat Owners Union and the Velim panchayat on the issue, none of the authorities have intervened till date in issuing directions to the boat owners to get their workers screened by the health authorities.
"From our side, we have taken all necessary measures to get the migrant workers screened. We have drafted a dedicated team at the Cutbona fishing jetty to get the workers screened. We are helpless since the boat owners have not cooperated in getting their workers for the screening," remarked a Balli PHC official.
Incidentally, the PHC officials had screened as many as 3000 migrant workers at the Cutbona fishing jetty around this time last year. "Till September end last year, we have been successful in screening around 3000 workers at the jetty. This time, there's poor response, but we are helpless for want of support from the boat owners," the official said.
Sources at the Balli Primary health centre said the centre has also written to the boat owners union to undertake cleanliness drive at the fishing jetty as well as ensure that there are no breeding sites at the jetty. The health centre's directive assumes significance given that Cutbona was hit by a dengue epidemic a couple of years ago, claiming the life of a local woman.
