PONDA: Officials at Opa Treatment Plant on Friday expressed concern that water levels at Opa may drop sharply in the next two days, causing water shortage to Ponda and Tiswadi talukas.
In the last two days, the water level dropped below the normal level of 2.50 metres (RL) and was 2.11 RL on Friday.
When contacted, Sudhir Parab, assistant engineer at Opa Water Treatment Plant, said the water situation is presently satisfactory and that, people of Tiswadi and Ponda talukas should get water without any problem.
“But if the water level drops in another two days, there would be a problem to supply water. We will be not in a position to treat water if the level declines further,” he cautioned.
He said water from the Salaulim river and from the mining pits is currently being pumped into river flowing to Opa. “We even had to pump water from Ganje river and we could maintain the level,” he said.
“We hope it will rain in the next two days so that water levels improve,” he said.
At Opa plant, 140 MLD water is filtered and almost 138 MLD is distributed every day.
Sources from Water Resource Department informed that there is no water in other rivers joining the Opa treatment plant and hence, there is no option to pump water from other sources.
