The ruling Curtorim panchayat body is in the cynosure of all eyes a day after the Congress won the Zilla panchayat by-election, with the opposition demanding resignation of Sarpanch Rupesh Naik on moral grounds. However, Rupesh has rejected the demand saying the voting pattern has clearly indicating that the people of Curtorim village had equally voted for losing candidate Dionisio Sardinha in the ZP poll.
Questions are also raised in Curtorim countryside whether the ZP by-poll result will have any bearing on the continuance of Sarpanch Rupesh, who along with his six member group had opposed MLA Reginaldo Lourenco backed candidate and winner Moreno Rebelo.
Opposition panch member Simon Barretto was quick to demand the resignation of Rupesh as the village sarpanch on moral grounds after Moreno's election as the ZP member. "The sarpanch and majority of his group members had supported Dionisio Sardinha, whose candidature did not find favour with the people," Simon said.
The sarpanch, however, begged to differ, while rejecting the demand for his resignation. "Why should I resign. Our candidate Dionisio Sardinha polled votes almost on par with the winning candidate Moreno.
This goes to shows that people of Curtorim had supported our candidate Sardinha as evident by the
number of votes polled by him in the by-poll," Rupesh said. When pointed out that the opposition may now gun for his head after he and his ruling group opposed the Congress candidate backed by local MLA, Rupesh shot back, "Our six member group is united. We took charge of office only a month and half ago. Any attempt made to dislodge me from office will only show that certain politicians are afraid of the ruling body, which has proved its popularity among Curtorkars as evident by the polling for our candidate Dionisio Sardinha."
In the election for the Curtorim sarpanch, Rupesh and his group was backed by local Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco. However, in the just concluded by-poll, the Curtorim MLA had backed Moreno Rebelo, while the Sarpanch had thrown his lot behind Dionisio Sardinha.
