The United Tribal Association Alliance (UTAA) has on Wednesday said the Centre should come out with an ordinance to ensure that the benefits of reservations given to the Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Tribes by the Constitution are not diluted as per the recent Supreme Court judgement.
In fact, UTAA Chief Prakash Velip has told the media that around 50 tribal MPs from across the country have called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to maintain status quo in the reservation structure.
“We are happy that Prime Minister has told the delegation of MPs that the BJP government at the centre will not do anything to change the Constitution of India guaranteeing reservations for the SCs and STs”, he said.
Saying he does not want to offer any comments on the Supreme Court’s judgement that creamy layer from the SCs and STs should not be eligible for reservation benefits, the UTAA Chief reminded that the Constitution of India has made a provision for reservations for the SC and ST communities.
“UTAA is against any move to dilute the provision in the Constitution providing for reservations for the SCs and STs. We are confident the government of India will bring out a suitable Legislation in the Winter Session to maintain the status quo on reservations”, he added.
On the all-India bandh call given by some organizations against the Supreme Court judgement, the UTAA chief said though the organization did not participate in enforcing the bandh, UTAA is not opposed to the call given by some organizations.
“Since the 50 MPs have called on the Prime Minister and that the PM has given an assurance to respect their sentiments, we have to give some time for the Central government to come out with a formula wherein the reservations provided by the Constitution are left untouched”, he added.
