Residents of Taleigao turned up in large numbers to elect representatives in 10 of the 11 wards in the panchayat with nearly 11,500 casting their votes. Polling was held by ballot on Sunday from 8 am to 5 pm and counting will be conducted on April 29 from 8 am.
The final polling percentage released by a top State EC official late in the evening topped the 70 per cent mark.
In one ward, Agnelo Da Cunha has already been declared elected unopposed after he was the only one to file his nomination in the ward. Da Cunha is a close aide of former minister Atanasio Monserrate and his wife Jennifer Monserrate. The latter is the MLA of Taleigao.
Polling on the whole was peaceful on Sunday and no complaints of any violation of the code of conduct were reported, the SEC official said.
Out of a total of 16,209 voters who were eligible to cast a ballot in the polls, 11,492 voters cast their votes.
There are a total of 11 wards in the Taleigao Panchayat and 28 candidates were vying for a seat on the grassroot level self-governing body.
