VASCO
Having encountered parking problems between Varunapuri and Dabolim Airport, lack of street lighting and rampant construction of structures by the roadsides, residents of Shantinagar-Vasco are now confronted with yet another problem.
Sewage has been flowing on the road, and in some cases has even entered into a few homes in the last few days.
Residents have alleged that while the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has turned a deaf ear to their complains, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has literally done nothing to prevent encroachments in Shantinagar.
According to information, recent sewage connections have been found to be faulty and several septic tanks have begun leaking in the area.
To make matters worse, construction activity by the roadside has damaged septic tanks, causing sewage water to flow in the open.
Angry residents have claimed that since Shantinagar is located on a slope, the overflowing sewage flows down and enters the houses, causing the entire area to emit foul smell.
“This is a very bad situation and we are helpless. A new ramp was built near the People For Animals (PFA) site and even the demarcation pole of the NHAI has been covered by the construction. The stink is unbearable and sewage is flowing throughout the day,” complained a resident.
Despite several attempts, NHAI Project Director P S Dodamani could not be contacted for comments in the matter. When contacted, MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said he had received complains regarding overflowing sewage. “We cannot allow any inconvenience to people because of such activities. I will direct my team to go and immediately inspect the site. We will conduct an inspection and immediately take strong action.”
“This is a health hazard and cannot be overlooked. I will immediately get the situation under control and clear the issue at the earliest,” said Fernandes.
