The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) Goa has detained a Ugandan national who had allegedly been living illegally in India after overstaying her visa.
Superintendent of Police Braz Menezes, holding charge of FRRO Goa, said the woman had been residing in Morjim for the past two months before she was traced and detained in Mandrem.
“She had been living in Morjim for the last two months. Our team tracked her down in Mandrem and detained her. The deportation process has begun,” Menezes said.
The operation was carried out by Police Sub Inspector Parag Parekh, Lady PSI Rifa Baretto, Police Constable Rupesh Matkar and Lady PC Garavi Pilarnkar.
The SP said that the Ugandan national had entered India on a business visa that expired in August 2023. She allegedly failed to extend her visa and continued staying in Mumbai for an extended period before shifting to Goa about two months ago.
The officials are now investigating her activities during her stay in the State, including whether she had local contacts, where she was accommodated and whether the establishment where she stayed complied with mandatory foreigner registration norms by submitting C-Form details to the police.
The FRRO is also seeking to determine how she supported herself while residing in Goa.
The latest detention comes amid an intensified drive by the FRRO against foreign nationals staying in Goa without valid travel documents or after overstaying their visas. June has witnessed a sharp rise in enforcement action, with 14 deportation cases initiated by the agency during the month.
