Farmers of the Novor Khazan Tenants Association in Curtorim are celebrating another bumper harvest, this time from their khazan fields, where they have successfully netted a rich variety of river fish. The catch includes chonak, konkan, shevtte, and both small and large-sized prawns.
Chairman of the Novor Khazan Tenants Association, Rui Menezes, shared that this year’s fish harvest follows the bumper paddy crop the farmers had gathered in October last year. "We have harvested bumper fish from the khazan fields this time," Menezes said, adding that the news of the harvest quickly spread, attracting river fish enthusiasts from neighbouring villages.
Explaining the process, Menezes elaborated that he and his brother cultivate the entire 200,000 square metres of the khazan fields during the monsoon. "After harvesting the bumper paddy last October, we introduced river water into the khazan fields in November for pisciculture. This ensures an additional income for farmers and helps fund the upkeep and maintenance of the khazan bunds," he explained.
Menezes also expressed satisfaction over the success of the fish harvest, stating that although many farmers own land in Novor Khazan, he and his brother manage the paddy cultivation with the help of mechanisation, using equipment provided by Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco.
