The Akhil Goa Kshatriya Pagi Samaj (AGKPS) has strongly objected to attempts by a person to change her surname from Parmar to Pagi.
The AGKPS raised the issued when the person published a public notice seeking to change her surname from Parmar to Pagi. In a formal complaint to CM Pramod Sawant and Law Minister Aleixo Sequeira, AGKPS President Divakar Pagi said the surname ‘Pagi’ is only used by the Pagi community and no other person can use the surname.
“The surname Pagi exclusively belongs to the Pagi community as per the notification and members of the Pagi community are those persons born in the Pagi Samaj. Hence, a person who is not from the Pagi community/Samaj cannot use the surname ‘Pagi’.
Pagi informed that a person had recently published a notice stating that her surname has been changed from Parmar to Pagi.
“The person is not from the Pagi community and has misguided the authorities by changing her surname from Parmar to Pagi to obtain benefits and such a change of surname cannot be allowed,” stated Pagi.
Divakar Pagi further stated that the AGKPS has raised a formal objection in this matter.
“To support our objection, we have submitted a detailed letter along with our registration certificate to several key officials, including the chief minister, law minister, speaker of the goa legislative assembly, chief registrar, and the collectors of both North and South Goa,” said Pagi.
“We have also held discussions with the law minister, urging him to take appropriate action in this matter. In our discussions, we demanded the cancellation of the registration, should the surname change been approved and reject her application for change in name to ‘Pagi’,” he added.
