CANACONA
Seasonal satellite markets selling various types of locally grown vegetables and fruits have sprung up along the NH66 highway between Padi in Quepem and Gulem in Canacona.
These satellite markets come alive by August end and the number of roadside vendors selling locally grown vegetables and fruits has almost doubled over the past few years.
Most of the vendors have set up temporary sheds at different locations right from Bendurdem (Balli), Paddi, Barcem, either side of Karmalghat, and Guelm areas of Shristhal village in Canacona.
The vendors sell all types of seasonal vegetables and fruits cultivated by them on the hillocks and forests during the monsoon. Among the popular vegetables and fruits are mashmelons, cucumbers, different types of gourds, long beans, cantaloupe, lady’s finger, pumpkins, local bananas, and various types of leafy vegetables.
These seasonal vegetables and fruits are in great demand as motorists halt by the roadside to make quick purchases.
The vendors, mostly belonging to the ST community, are the traditional growers and live in the interior areas. They bring their produce to the highway early in the morning and return home with their unsold items late evening.
