After remaining without water supply for nearly two days, Panaji’s water supply normalised on Sunday, even as those staying at high altitude said they were left high and dry.
Water supply to many parts of North Goa, particularly Tiswadi and Ponda, was severely affected as the incessant rains had flooded and submerged pumping stations at the various reservoirs and waterworks.
The Opa water treatment plant was inundated in the flood thus cutting off the water supply to Panaji and surrounding areas.
Those people who have no provision for storage of water suffered.
Assistant Engineer Panaji, Digamber Naik, said, “Almost 60 to 70 percent water supply has been restored. However, the high-altitude areas are still facing problems.”
He said the PWD has engaged two additional pumps and two more will also be roped in to solve the problem.
The areas like Raibandar, Marcel and high-altitude areas of the capital city are still facing problems,”
Naik said.
He said the PWD supplied water in tankers due to the emergency situation. On-demand, one tanker supplied water to 10 houses, he added.
Panaji Mayor Rohit Monserrate said things were normalising now and water was supplied through tankers.
Deputy Mayor Vasant Agashikar said that two tankers were deployed 24x7 and these made around 20 trips in a day.
