PANAJI
In a bid to bring discipline in commercial signages in Panaji, the Charles Correa Foundation (CCF) is organising a competition and exhibition this weekend, March 24, at Fundacao Oriente in Panaji. The initiative is actually part of a project called ‘Re-Imagining Commercial Signages in Panaji’, which has been given to the CCF by the City Corporation of Panaji (CCP).
Architect Ameet Sukhthankar is leading this project. At a press conference, Sukhthankar said, “As of now, there is no uniformity in commercial signages in Panaji, whether it is about size, shape or colour. Often such signages block the façades of beautiful buildings, which at times are heritage structures. As a part of this project, we are trying to re-imagine commercial signages in Panaji.”
In simple words, there are no laws regulating signages in Panaji or anywhere else in Goa. As a result, anyone who owns a shop puts up any sort of board or sign he or she deems fit. Such boards obstruct the view of buildings, which ultimately damages the vibe of the streets.
“Our aim is to bring some uniformity and legibility in the commercial signages in the city. As part of the project, we are looking at commercial signages of shops abutting the roads. For the competition, we have invited 8 participants, who are architects, graphic designers and town planners, to design such signages for us,” Sukhthankar added.
There are three categories under the competition. Overall appropriation of street signages, which attracts a prize of Rs 50,000, Detailing of six different signages’, which attracts a prize of Rs 50,000. And People’s Choice Awards with a prize of Rs 20,000.   Voting for People’s Choice Award will happen from 9 am to 4:30 pm on March 24 at Fundacao Oriente. The exhibition will be held on March 24-25 at Fundacao Oriente from 10 am to 8 pm and on March 30-31 at Azad Maidan from 10 am to 8 pm.
Voting for People’s Choice Award will happen from 9 am to 4:30  pm on March 24 at Fundacao Oriente
Sukhthankar further said, “We have been told that the guidelines we  are giving to the CCP will be incorporated in the trade license, which  municipalities give.”
This means that owners or occupants of the shops will have to comply by these guidelines in future.
