MARGAO
As the unhygienic state of the SGPDA retail market worsens by the day, with complaints galore over its upkeep and maintenance, PWD Minister Digambar Kamat has told the district administration to constitute a panel to look into the issues plaguing the mega retail market.
Kamat issued the instructions to Additional Collector, South Goa, Srinet Kothwale, after members of the NGO United Goans Foundation, led by president Dr Ashish Kamat and Dominick Norohna, called on him at his weekly darbar to complain about the unhygienic conditions at the PDA retail market.
As the duo drew the PWD Minister’s attention to a report compiled by Roland Martins following a joint inspection of the market in June, Kamat immediately got in touch with the consumer rights activist to find out the contents and findings of the report.
The Minister asked Martins to send him the report by Tuesday evening and, at the same time, instructed the Additional Collector to set up a panel comprising officials from the SGPDA, Margao Municipal Council and other departments to look into all the issues plaguing the market. “After I go through the report compiled by Roland Martins, the panel will examine the issue and see what basically needs to be done on an emergency basis,” Kamat told the media.
He said members of the public had drawn his attention to the hardships faced by consumers visiting the market complex for shopping.
Meanwhile, Ashish Kamat and Dominick Norohna told the media that they had taken up the SGPDA retail market issue with the Minister in view of its deteriorating condition.
The duo also raised with the Minister the absence of lifts in the Osia Commercial Complex, making it difficult for people to access the government offices housed in the building.
