The traditional fair linked to the feast of the patroness of the Panjim Church which was postponed due to the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will now be held along the Mandovi river promenade from December 14 to 18, Mayor Rohit Monserrate announced.
The announcement saw a mad rush and serpentine queues since early Monday morning from traders seeking to file their claim for allocation of a stall at the fair.
The chaos at the CCP began minutes after the CCP opened up and began distributing forms to apply for stall allocation.
According to the mayor, the number of stalls this time round will be smaller as the CCP has decided to exclude the section of the promenade between the health department and Kala Academy to avoid disturbance to local residents.
The chaos at the CCP did not subside even after distribution of forms ended as many did not get the coveted form. They refused to disperse and the police had to be called in to restore order.
Meanwhile, Monserrate said the CCP is working to recover the outstanding dues of nearly Rs 35 crore as the capital city's civic body is threading precariously on the financial path.
"We have to get this money. We have to pay salaries and also take up essential development work," Monserrate said while speaking to the media on Monday.
