Unhappy over the education department’s delay in appointing a full-time English teacher at the government primary school at Pissurlem, a group of parents expressed their anger at the Valpoi education office on Friday.
They have threatened to stage a protest or get
their children to boycott classes if authorities fail to appoint a full-fime teacher at the earliest.
Speaking to The Goan, School PTA president Shivanand Chari said over 50 students are enrolled in four classes of the primary school and they added that a full-time English teacher has not been made available for the past few months.
“The education department has appointed a teacher, who comes for only three days in a week. Students are facing hardship in completing the syllabus,” complained Chari.
“We had submitted a memorandum to the Valpoi education office as well as the director of education at Panaji, but authorities have not been attentive to our problems.”
“Many government schools are closing down in Sattari taluka due to inadequate enrollment, but this problem is not there at Pissurlem school. So, why should authorities provide shabby treatment to a government school which has a good number of students?”
“If the education department does not take this issue seriously, parents may consider shifting their children to other schools and enrollment could drop in future,” Chari added. The unhappy parents marched to the Valpoi education office and confronted the officer. They also threatened to agitate or get their children to boycott classes if authorities were unable to depute a full-time English teacher for the school at the earliest.
After listening to the aggrieved parents, the education officer Shrirang Barve said a proposal for a full-time English teacher at the Pissurlem primary school had already been sent to higher authorities and they were awaiting a reply in the matter.
Barve, however, assured to forward their grievances and demands to the education department.
