A delegation from Chandor comprising the panchayat members and the Parents Teachers Association of St Joseph Educational Institute called on local Cuncolim MLA Rajan Naik and submitted a memorandum with a plea to construct the rail overbridge or underground subway at the existing level crossing.
The delegation led by deputy sarpanch Marcel Fernandes and PTA Chairman Savio Antao impressed upo the MLA to take up the work on the overbridge or subway on a war-footing in view of the inconvenience faced by the local population when the railway crossing is closed for traffic.
The PTA members made a forceful plea to the MLA to construct the bridge at the earliest. Copies of the memorandum have been marked to the South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar and Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu.
Deputy sarpanch Marcel told The Goan that the parents in particular and the villagers in general have made a forceful plea to the local Cuncolim MLA to pursue the long-pending demand.
When The Goan contacted Cuncolim MLA Rajan Naik to shed light on the status of the proposal to build a bridge at the railway crossing at Chandor, he said he is vigorously pursuing the matter with the railways. “It has been decided that a rail overbridge will be built meters away from the existing level crossing, while a subway has bene proposed at the level crossing. The two sites have been inspected by me along with railway officials,” Rajan said.
He further said that a proposal to construct the approach roads to the level crossing has also been cleared by the government.
