Emphasising the need to decongest the Chogm road at Porvorim, Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte has suggested a ban on the parking of vehicles to reduce the number of road mishaps at the site and will convene a meeting with the traffic police on Wednesday.
Khaunte was speaking to reporters on Monday after he along with Saligao MLA Kedar Naik jointly inspected the stretch of Chogm road between O Coqueiro Circle and Shree Maharudra Amrekarnath temple. Porvorim Police Inspector Anant Gaonkar, Pilerne-Marra Sarpanch Sandeep Bandodkar, Panchas Amarnath Govenkar, Karan Govenkar and some locals were present on this occasion.
The minister has also decided to convene a meeting with the Calangute Traffic Police in this regard on Wednesday.
“The Chogm road is a very busy road as a lot of tourist vehicles use this route to travel to and from Calangute. This has led to a number of road mishaps along the stretch of road between O Coqueiro and the Shree Maharudra Amrekarnath temple,” said Khaunte.
“Residents in the area have also been demanding measures to decongest this stretch of road. The Chogm road can be decongested to a great extent if parking of vehicles on this stretch of road is banned, as there is hardly any space for two vehicles to cross each other although the road has been recently widened and hotmixed.”
“If parking of vehicles is banned, then police can be posted regularly along this road, especially between the Porvorim circle and Saligao, and strict action can then be taken against vehicles parking on the road.”
The minister admitted that this stretch of road gets flooded during the monsoons, making it difficult for pedestrians.
“This stretch of road also needs to be beautified, while a divider should be laid for the smooth movement of vehicles,” said Khaunte.
Saligao MLA Kedar Naik also agreed that several accidents take place on the stretch of road and the only solution would be to work out ways to decongest the road.
“The tourism minister has made the right suggestion to ban parking of vehicles along the stretch of road,” said Naik.
