Replying to a calling attention motion moved by Poriem MLA Pratapsingh Rane, Chief Minister listed out the efforts being made by the Goa Police in a bid to reduce the number of traffic accidents in the state.
“Apart from regular enforcement of traffic laws, special drives against drunk driving, riding without helmet, without licence, rash and negligent driving, etc., are being organized from time to time,” Parrikar said in his reply.
“The thrust of road safety education has been to inculcate in the road users respect for proper and safe use of road and transportation and to spread road safety awareness among the masses. As a part of the educational drive during the year 2016 a total of 27,447 students and 8334 drivers were given lectures on road safety,” Parrikar informed. Till April 30, 2017, 7,555 students and 2,290 drivers were given lectures on road safety.
Rane also raised the issue of slow-moving heavy vehicles in the fast lanes which forced other vehicles to overtake from the left leading to accidents.
He pointed to the fact that there are no strict procedures for giving licences. Parrikar responded by saying that education was the only way out in this situation.
