Vandana Naik, who worked as a teacher under the double part-time contract system for 21 years, stated the State has only renewed their contracts, but hasn t made any mention of absorbing them on a permanent basis. “All the members are high school vocational stream teachers. After the State had adopted the concept that was introduced by the Centre in 1988-89, we were promised permanent jobs, but year after year they have only been renewing our contract,” she said. She also added that from an initial salary of `1,500, they today earn up to `15,000 based on their qualifications, but do not receive any benefits, including PF and bonuses. Naik lamented the lack of job security as they were not assured of retaining their jobs. Once the central scheme was discontinued, the State through the Education Department hired the teachers for 20 vocational subjects, including fashion designing, computer technology, hotel management, bakery, automobile engineering and horticulture.
