The Maina-Curtorim police arrested one Cruz Raikar Fernandes for killing Rebello. He has been remanded to 10 days of police custody.
The police attributed the murder to previous enmity between the deceased and the accused. The accused was arrested when he had gone to the police outpost to lodge a compliant as he too sustained injuries on his hand and head.
The deceased was killed outside Jose Bar, Davorlim, at around 9.30 pm following a scuffle.
PI Gurudas Kadam, who was holding charge of Maina-Curtorim police station on Sunday, said that the incident occurred when accused Cruz was sitting in the bar. He said the deceased Franky came to the bar and picked up an argument with Cruz, apparently questioning him for spoiling his name.
Bar owner Manuel Costa told Navelim MLA Avertano Furtado and the police that since the duo were engaged in a verbal duel, he told them to go outside. PI Kadam said the bar owner and his helper tried to separate the duo, but in vain. As the duo were engaged in a scuffle, the bar owner told the police that he closed the shop and went home, only to realise later that the scuffle had ended in a murder.
PI Kadam said the accused hit the deceased with an empty whisky bottle on his head which proved fatal. Asked whether the deceased died on the spot or on the way to the hospital, the PI said the 108 ambulance which had come to the spot had declared the deceased dead.
MLA Avertano Furtado, also visited the spot on Monday morning along with DySP Dinraj Govekar and PI Harish Madkaikar.
