Former Congress Minority Cell Chairman Nazir Khan on Friday objected to laying of pavers on incomplete drainage works in Baina and also appealed to Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar to stop the work to prevent dangers to motorists and pedestrians.
“Tenders for these works on drainage on one side of the road, utility ducts on the other side of the road and pavers on either side of the road were passed in 2014 when Milind Naik was the MLA,” Khan said.
“The work was awarded to a Mumbai-based contractor but it was stopped in 2015. We have now noticed that the work has begun a few days ago and the contractor has now begun laying of pavers on all the slabs over the utility ducts.”
“The worst part is that ducts are built at different stretches of the road while there are places where there is no duct built at all. There are huge spaces in between ducts and once pavers are placed on the ducts that are built, people will start walking on it only to fall down at places where there is no slab at all.”
“There are certain places where there are electricity poles and since the electricity poles have not been removed, the contractor has left the area and not built anything there.”
Khan said he questioned the contractor and was told that he (contractor) had written multiple times to the GSIDC, electricity department and even Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) to clear the poles so that he can build the duct and finish his job.
“But since he did not get a response, he has decided to put pavers wherever a duct has been built and finish the work,” said Khan.
