An unknown pedestrian was killed in a hit and run accident on the Western bypass at Mungul, bringing to the fore again the non-functioning street lights on the bypass.

In fact, the fatality triggered uproar as locals questioned the failure of the authorities to restore illumination on the bypass.

Fatorda police informed that the deceased, suspected to be a beggar, was hit and run over by a speeding vehicles, killing him on the spot. He said the police have started investigating into the case.

Social worker from Benaulim Warren Alemao has lashed out at the authorities over what he termed as a tragedy on the Navelim-Benaulim stretch of the Western bypass, blaming the government and the elected representatives for the life lost in the accident.

“Just days ago, I had raised an alarm about the complete darkness along the Navelim–Benaulim stretch of the Western Bypass. Today, a serious accident has claimed a life. A family is shattered. A loved one is gone”, he said

Squarely blaming the government and the elected representatives, Warren said their silence and inaction have cost a life. “Wake up and take action before more blood is spilled on the bypass road”, he demanded.

Motorists using the western bypass from Navelim to Benaulim had been complaining of pitch dark conditions on the stretch due to the non-functioning street lights.

In fact, Velim MLA Cruz Silva had raised the issue on the floor of the House earlier this week, demanding action by the authorities in restoring the illumination and ensuring safety of pedestrians and motorists.
